What makes Nam Dok Mai different from other mangoes?

Nam Dok Mai is Thailand's most popular mango variety, due to its distinctive taste and appearance. "Nam Dok Mai" is Thai for "flower water"Singular for its elongated shape ending in a beak, its beautiful yellow color and its sweet, vanilla aroma, it has become a favorite among mango lovers the world over.

What does Nam Dok Mai mango taste like?

Mango Nam Dok Mai has a sweet flavor with hints of vanilla and a subtle lemony note. It naturally contains vanillic acid, responsible for its slight vanilla aroma. The flesh is melt-in-the-mouth, deep yellow in color and fiber-free.

By eating tasteless fruit, people are losing the taste of natural foods and turning to increasingly processed and artificial foods.

A fresher fruit, ripened longer on the tree, brings complete pleasure. At last, healthy eating becomes a joy and a pleasure once again.

To achieve this, we have developed our "perfect timing" logistics. Our Asian mangos are harvested at physiological maturity and delivered to you on average 5 days after harvest. In comparison, industrial mangoes are picked immaturely and generally reach the consumer 20 days after harvest.

On delivery, the mango may be slightly firm. Its color may be yellow-green. Let it ripen at room temperature for 1 to 3 days, until it's ripe and juicy enough for your taste.

Ripeness test: Gently squeeze the mango with your fingers. When it gives in slightly, it's ready to eat.

Keep mango at room temperature until ripe and ready to eat.

Once ripe, you can place it in the refrigerator to prolong its freshness. It will keep for 3 to 5 days in the refrigerator.

Cut two cheeks on each side of the pit to extract the flesh. The kernel of the mango Nam Dok Maï is very thin, so there's more pulp to enjoy!

You can then slice it or eat the flesh with a spoon. It's fabulous eaten on its own, but you can also add it to smoothies, fruit salads or desserts.

The Thai favorite way to eat this mango is sliced and served with a sweet, sticky rice, the famous "Mango Sticky Rice".

Mango is a nutritious fruit that can help keep the body healthy, especially the heart, eyes, immune and digestive systems.

Main nutrients of mango

Mango is rich in:

  • vitamin B9: provides 35.10% of the RDA, i.e. 70.20 µg per 100 g
  • vitamin C: provides 31.25% of the RDA, i.e. 25 mg per 100 g

Mango is a source of:

  • vitamin A (carotenoid family): provides 18% of the RDA, i.e. 144 µg per 100 g. Mango is the 5th fruit with the highest β-carotene content (Ciqual 2020 table)
  • vitamin E: provides 17.08% of RDA, i.e. 2.05 mg per 100 g. Mango is the fruit with the highest vitamin E content, just behind blackcurrants (Ciqual 2020 table)

Good to know, mango contains two main types of phytonutrients with antioxidant effects:

  • carotenoids, contained in large quantities in the pulp, which give it its beautiful yellow to orange color
  • polyphenols, contained mainly in the skin and core

Mango contains several polyphenols with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions, protecting against cell degeneration.

To make the most of its polyphenols, and in particular mangiferin (often offered as a dietary supplement because of its many benefits on its own), we recommend that you scrape off the pulp in contact with the fruit's skin and stone. You can use a knife or your teeth to scrape the pulp.

Some mango varieties have a pleasant skin to eat - these are generally the ones with the lowest polyphenol content.

The optimum season to enjoy the queen of Asian mangoes is generally between spring and summer, when the fruit is bursting with sugar.

You can also order it in mid-season, when it's delicious but slightly less concentrated in flavor than at the height of the season.

The mango Nam Dok Mai is a cultivar of Mangifera indica. Its branches blossom at different times, as if animated by a life of their own. This singularity enables it to extend its production period. Which means: a long season, for our great pleasure.
